Revelation 2:1
“To the angel of the assembly in Ephesus write: He who holds the seven stars in his right hand, he who walks among the seven golden menorahs says these things:”

“Ephesus had been one of the first Asian centers of the imperial cult, and it was also the most prominent; Domitian had allowed Ephesus the title of guardian of his temple. On the city’s notoriety in *magic and the worship of Artemis, see comment on Acts 19. Inscriptions attest that Ephesus also had a sizable Jewish population…” (Keener, Craig S. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (IVP Bible Background Commentary Set) (pp. 731-732). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition.)

Characteristic 1: He who holds the seven stars in his right hand, he who walks among the seven golden menorahs.

We may find clues to the condition of the congregation in Ephesus by reading Acts and the Letter to the Ephesians. Although, by the time Revelation is written, this would largely be the second and third generation of believers in the city. Around 54 CE, In Ephesus, Paul went to the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jewish people the Scriptures. They asked him to stay longer, but Paul said he had to leave, according to some manuscripts, “must by all means keep the coming feast in Jerusalem” (Acts 18:19-21). Apollos, a native of Alexandria, was there spreading the word, along with Priscilla and Aquila. The congregation is receiving this letter roughly 40 years later. Ignatius (108 - 140CE) , a disciple of John, wrote a letter to the Ephesians sometime before his martyrdom.

Seven Golden Menorahs. There were ten golden menorahs in Solomon’s Temple (1 Chron 28:15). It appears that Yeshua is walking in the Holy Place of the Heavenly Temple. If so, it appears that he may be in the 4th Heaven, as the Talmud states,

Reish Lakish said: There are seven firmaments, and they are as follows: 1) Vilon, 2) Rakia, 3) Sheḥakim, 4) Zevul, 5) Ma’on, 6) Makhon, and 7) AravotZevul, abode, is the location of the heavenly Jerusalem and the heavenly Temple, and there the heavenly altar is built, and the angel Michael, the great minister, stands and sacrifices an offering upon it, as it is stated: “I have surely built a house of Zevul for You, a place for You to dwell forever” (I Kings 8:13). And from where do we derive that Zevul is called heaven? As it is written: “Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious abode [Zevul]” (Isaiah 63:15). (Chagigah 12b, The William Davidson Talmud, Sefaria.org)

These Seven Menorot are the seven communities. The symbolism of the communities is mysterious, with interesting possibilities, and different interpretations. As pointed out in chapter 1, they all are geographically located in Turkey. One interpretation is that they refer to 7 epochs over the last 2,000 years. If this is so, we are in Laodicea. Another idea is that all 7 of these congregations are here today in one form or another. If so, does Yeshua walk among us? Seven menorot means there are 49 flames, linking to the 49 days of the Omer.

Revelation 2:2
“I know your works, and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and have tested those who call themselves emissaries, and they are not, and found them false.”

Revelation 2:3
“You have perseverance and have endured for my name’s sake, and have not grown weary.”

Revelation 2:4
“But I have this against you, that you left your first love.”

"A parable which Rabbi Yaakov Yosef (a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov), was fond of telling and retelling perhaps best portrays the condition of his age:

"I heard a tale of an apprentice who learned his trade from a smith. After he had mastered it, he made a list, point after point, of how he must go about his craft. He did not mark down, however, that he should first ignite a spark for the fire, because this was obvious and hardly needed to be mentioned. Now he went to work at the king's palace, but, alas, found to his dismay that he was unable to perform his duties. He was soon dismissed. Finally he returned to his master, who reminded him of his first principle, which he had forgotten." (Zaphat Paneach 16a, Porat Yosef 17d, 99c)

R' Samuel Dresner comments,

"The young blacksmith may have learned how to wield the hammer, how to shape the metal, how to blow the bellows; he may have mastered all the skills of his craft, but one thing he had forgotten, without which all of his knowledge, all his talent, all his experience were of no avail - how to kindle the spark. . . They produced mighty scholars whose heads were crammed with quotations, whose lips spoke long and involved discourses, whose hands were busy putting ink to paper so that books poured forth in a mighty stream from the presses. They maintained the outward observance of the Law: synagogues were attended daily for prayer, stores were closed on Sabbath and Festival, leavened bread was not eaten on the Passover, huts were built for Sukkot, fasting was universal on Yom Kippur on Tisha b'Av. But one thing was missing, without which all the knowledge, all the study, all the books, all the apparent meticulous observance of the Law was of no benefit - the spark which gave life to all else. The duties of "Torah study and prayer" have to be fulfilled, "but above all else is the yearning, the spark of flame which sets fire to hitlahavut - the craving, longing for His love." Forgotten was the obvious and self-evident, that all the commandments in the Torah - study and prayer, Sabbath and Festival - were only for the sake of drawing closer to the L-rd. A relearning of "the first principle" was necessary. A return to the Master to learn that first principle once again was the spiritual need of the time.” (R' Samuel Dresner, The Zaddik, Schocken Books, pg. 35)

Revelation 2:5
“Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I am coming to you swiftly, and will move your menorah out of its place, unless you repent.”

The Mishnah has an inverse statement:

“If someone was a penitent, one should not say to him, "Remember your former actions."
Mishnah, Bava Metzia 4:10, Sefaria.org

The words of rebuke here are a characteristic of Mashiach:

“The “voice of Jacob” corresponds to the voice of rebuke…”
(Rebbe Nachman’s Torah, Parashat Toldot, Breslov Research Institute, pg. 207)

R’ Chaim Kramer summarizes Rebbe Nachman’s teaching in connection with Mashiach,

“…the Voice of Rebuke is rooted in Eden, which corresponds to Keter, the source of Mashiach’s vitality (see Tikkuney Zohar 55, pg 88a). At the level of Keter only kindness exists. Thus the rebuke given will reveal that kindness, causing people to draw near to Mashiach…Mashiach will possess this “Voice of Rebuke” because MaShIaCh is like MaSiach, “one who speaks.” Since Mashiach is bound together with all souls through his acute sense of smell (i.e. the “nose”(he will be able to rebuke everyone properly, to arouse awe within them and draw them closer to G-d. His voice will be the flowing “River” from Eden…” (Mashiach, Who What Why How Where When, R’ Chaim Kramer, Breslov Research Institute, pgs. 66-67)

For More information, see Ladder of Jacob, Toldot: The Voice of Jacob.

Revelation 2:6
“But this you have, that you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.”

"I will set no vile thing before my eyes. I hate the deeds of faithless men. They will not cling to me." (Psalms 101:3)

Who were the Nicolaitans? While there is no internal Scriptural evidence for this, Irenaeus in Against Heresies, Book I, Chapter 26:3, claims that they were followers of Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism mentioned in Acts 6:5. He writes,

The Nicolaitanes are the followers of that Nicolas who was one of the seven first ordained to the diaconate by the apostles. They lead lives of unrestrained indulgence. The character of these men is very plainly pointed out in the Apocalypse of John, [when they are represented] as teaching that it is a matter of indifference to practice adultery, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. (Irenaeus, Adversus Haereses, i. 26, §3)

Eusebius in Ecclesiastical History, Chapter 29, claimed this group CLAIMED they followed Nicholas, shrouding themselves under his name, who he says instead of practicing adultery went the other direction, renouncing his passion for his wife who was very beautiful, thus believing he was supposed to “abuse the flesh.” This is asceticism. Ultimately, Yeshua does not say “the teachings of Nicolaus” but the “Nicolaitans.” Alternatively, nico (victory/power) laity (people) has been suggested, i.e. people who wield power over others.

 Revelation 2:7
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes I will give to eat of the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of my G-d.”

He who has an ear. “He who has ears, let him hear.” (Matthew 11:15).
See Parashat Ha’azinu for more information.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have shalom. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

“For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our L-rd and Savior Yeshua the Messiah, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.” (2 Peter 2:20)

“Little children, you are from G-d and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Tree of Life. Our purpose from the Beginning was to eat of this tree. Proverbs says,

“She is a Tree of Life to those who strengthen her, and happy are those who support her.” (Proverbs 3:18)

We will explore this Tree in chapter 22.

Paradise. The Garden of Eden, PaRDes, the New Jerusalem, the Olam Haba. See Chapter 21.

Revelation 2:8
“To the angel of the assembly in Smyrna write: The First and the Last, who was dead, and has come to life says these things:”

Characteristic 2:  The First and the Last, who was Dead, and has come to life.

See 1:17. The “first” (rishon) is a title for Messiah in Pesachim 5a.

Ignatius of Antioch (108CE - 140CE), a disciple of John, wrote a letter to the believers in Smyrna, in the generation after Revelation. In this letter, he countered the teaching of Docetism, the idea that Yeshua had not come in a physical body, but was merely an illusion.

Revelation 2:9
“I know your works, oppression, and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.”

Whatever the identity of these people are, one thing we know: They are NOT Jews. This could easily be applied to those who hold Replacement Theology doctrines, claiming to be the “true Jews”, the “true Israel”, like some Two House and Black Hebrew Israelite groups. Alternatively, this could refer to the ‘Erev Rav’. This verse has been used to attack Jews throughout history, and it is important to be cautious of antisemitic interpretations. G-d has not forsaken His covenant with Israel (see Romans 9-11)

Revelation 2:10
Do not be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Ten days. A potential connection to the time called Yamim Nora’im, the Days of Awe, from Rosh HaShanah to Yom Kippur.

Revelation 2:11
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. He who overcomes will not be harmed by the Second Death.”

The Jerusalem Targum says,

“Let Reuben live in this world, nor die the second death (מְתָ֖יו מִסְפָּֽר) which the wicked the in the world to come; and let his youths be with the men in number.” (Jerusalem Targum on Deuteronomy 33:6, Sefaria.org, Cf. Targum Yonatan on Isaiah 22:14, 65:6,15, Jeremiah 51:39, 51:57)

“Those who are born twice, only die once. Those who are born once, die twice.” The first death is separation of the soul from the body. The second death is separation from HaShem, the death in the Lake of Fire. See chapter 20.

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the L-rd has promised to those who love him.” (James 1:12)

It was a favorite saying of Rav: This World (Olam Hazeh) is not like the  World to Come (Olam Haba). In the World to Come there is neither eating nor drinking; no procreation of children or business transactions; no envy or hatred or rivalry, but the righteous sit enthroned, their crowns on their heads, and enjoy the splendor of the Shekinah; as it is said, "And they beheld G-d, and did eat and drink" (Exod. 24:11). (Berachot 17a, Sefaria.org. Cf. Mishnah, Sanhedrin 10:1)

Revelation 2:12
To the angel of the assembly in Pergamum write: He who has the sharp double-edged sword says these things:”

Characteristic 3: He who has the sharp double-edged sword.

As we have noted above, the Double Edged Sword is the Torah. Messiah’s Voice becomes a sword which will destroy Armilus, the Antichrist (Psalm 149:6, Hebrews 4:12, Isaiah 11:4, Revelation 1:16, 4th Ezra 13:9-11, Targum Yonatan to Isaiah 11:4, see below at 2:16)

Revelation 2:13
“I know your works and where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. You hold firmly to my name, and did not deny my faith in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.”

“Its famous giant altar of Zeus (120 by 112 feet) overlooked the city on its citadel, and some have suggested that this is the background for “Satan’s throne” in this verse. Perhaps a more likely allusion for “Satan’s throne” is the local worship of the emperor, celebrated on Pergamum’s coinage in this period. Local rulers had been worshiped before the Roman period, and Pergamum was one of the first cities of Asia to build a temple to a Roman emperor (a temple to Augustus, also conspicuous on the citadel). A further imperial temple was dedicated there within a decade or two after John wrote Revelation.” (Keener, Craig S. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (IVP Bible Background Commentary Set) (p. 733). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition.)

Revelation 2:14
“But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to throw a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.”

"Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against HaShem in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of HaShem." (Numbers 31:16)

Revelation 2:15
“So you also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans likewise.”

It appears that we have the teaching of Bilaam, which is sexual immorality and idolatry on hand, and the teaching of the Nicolaitans on the other, which could be extreme asceticism, or according to some Church fathers, the idea that one can be clean of sexual immorality after 7 days, and may violate the covenant of marriage and commit adultery and that meat sacrificed to idols may be eaten after they had been ‘exorcised’.

Revelation 2:16
“Repent therefore, or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of my mouth.”

"...with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked." (Isaiah 11:4)

“But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with faithfulness the needy of the earth; and he shall smite the sinners of the earth with the word of his mouth, and with the speech of His lips he shall slay Armillus the wicked.” (Targum Yonatan to Isaiah 11:4)

"Our Rabbis said: SWORD refers to the Torah, as it is written, And a two-edged sword in their hand (Ps. 149:6)" (Genesis Rabbah 21:9, Soncino Press Edition)

“After seven days I dreamed a dream in the night and behold, a wind arose from the sea and stirred up all its waves. And I looked, and behold, this wind made something like the figure of a man come up out of the heart of the sea. And I looked, and behold, that man flew with the clouds of heaven; and wherever he turned his face to look, everything under his gaze trembled, and whenever his voice issued from his mouth, all who heard his voice melted as wax melts when it feels the fire. After this I looked, and behold, an innumerable multitude of men were gathered together from the four winds of heaven to make war against the man who came up out of the sea. And I looked, and behold, he carved out for himself a great mountain, and flew up upon it. And I tried to see the region or place from which the mountain was carved, but I could not. After this I looked, and behold, all who had gathered together against him, to wage war with him, were much afraid, yet dared to fight. And behold, when he saw the onrush of the approaching multitude, he neither lifted his hand nor held a spear or any weapon of war; but I saw only how he sent forth from his mouth as it were a stream of fire, and from his lips a flaming breath, and from his tongue he shot forth a storm of sparks. All these were mingled together, the stream of fire and the flaming breath and the great storm, and fell on the onrushing multitude which was prepared to fight, and burned them all up, so that suddenly nothing was seen of the innumerable multitude but only the dust of ashes and the smell of smoke. When I saw it, I was amazed. After this I saw the same man come down from the mountain and call to him another multitude which was peaceful. Then many people came to him, some of whom were joyful and some sorrowful; some of them were bound, and some were bringing others as offerings.” (4th Ezra 13:1-13, Pseudepigrapha.com)

Revelation 2:17
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes, to him I will give of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows but he who receives it.”

Hidden Manna.

“R. Eleazar taught that in the coming age the righteous shall eat of this manna, but of a much higher quality, a quality which was never seen in this world, as it is written: “To behold the beauty of the L-rd and to visit his Temple” (Psalm 27:4); “Eye hath not seen… what he has prepared for him that waits for Him” (Isaiah 64:4).” (Zohar, Shemot 63a)

The Talmud speaks of Seven Heavens, one of them is named Shechakim, where manna is ground for the tzaddikim:

Sheḥakim, heights (or Mills), is the one in which mills stand and grind manna for the righteous, as it is stated: “And He commanded the heights [Sheḥakim] above, and opened the doors of heaven; and He caused manna to rain upon them for food, and gave them of the ‘grain’ of heaven” (Psalms 78:23–24).” (Chagigah 12b, The William Davidson Talmud, Sefaria.org)

“From the dew in this skull (Gulgalta) manna is ground for the righteous for the World to Come, and through it the dead shall be revived.” (Zohar, Ha’azinu 117, Zohar.com, cf. Luke 23:33)

White Stone.

“...jurors used black stones to vote for a person’s guilt but white ones to vote for innocence.” (Keener, Craig S. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (IVP Bible Background Commentary Set) (p. 734). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition.)

“In the ancient world a white stone was used as an admission ticket to public festivals; believers will be admitted to the Messianic feast. On it is written either their own new name or that of the Messiah (19:12)” (David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Commentary : A Companion Volume to the Jewish New Testament, electronic ed. (Clarksville: Jewish New Testament Publications, 1996), Re 2:17.)

New Name. Like Abram/Abraham, Sarai/Sarah, Jacob/Israel, Yosef/Yehosef (Psalm 81:6), Hoshea/Yehoshua. "The nations shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of HaShem shall name." (Isaiah 62:2)

Revelation 2:18
“To the angel of the assembly in Thyatira write: ‘The Son of G-d, who has his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like burnished brass, says these things:”

Characteristic 4: The Son of G-d, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and feet like burnished brass. As cited in chapter 1,

"I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold, a man clothed in linen, whose thighs were adorned with pure gold of Uphaz: his body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as flaming torches, and his arms and his feet like burnished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude." (Daniel 10:5-6)

"I have seen the L-rd’s eyes, shining like the sun’s rays and filling the eyes of man with awe." (2 Enoch 39:4)

Revelation 2:19
“I know your works, your love, faith, service, patient endurance, and that your last works are more than the first.”

In Judaism, we must increase light, joy, and mitzvot. Not decrease. Hence on Hanukkah, we light 1 candle on the first day, and 8 on the last night. This is based on “and there was evening, and there was morning.” (Genesis 1). Our light should be on the increase in our relationship with HaShem through Yeshua.

Revelation 2:20
“But I have this against you, that you tolerate your woman, Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. She teaches and seduces my servants to commit sexual immorality, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.”

The personality of Jezebel provides a potent background for this spiritual prostitute, which in many ways seems to recall the Zonah, the Prostitute, from Revelation 17-18, Proverbs and the Zohar (we will discuss this in Revelation 17).

“The biblical “Jezebel” was not a prophetess, but the name is used here for its related connotations. Jezebel had nine hundred prophets (1 Kings 18:19) and led G-d’s people into idolatry (see comment on Rev 2:14). She was accused of prostitution, a damaging charge against a king’s wife (the term was probably meant spiritually, as one who led Israel from their commitment to G-d), and of witchcraft, no doubt for her occult involvement in pagan cults (2 Kings 9:22).” (Keener, Craig S. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (IVP Bible Background Commentary Set) (p. 734). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition)

Revelation 2:21
“I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.”

“The L-rd is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2nd Peter 3:9)

Revelation 2:22
“Behold, I will throw her into a bed, and those who commit adultery with her into great oppression, unless they repent of her works.”

Revelation 2:23
“I will kill her children with death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.”

“And you, Solomon my son, know the G-d of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for Hashem searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. (1 Chronicles 28:9)

“R. Ishmael said: The angel Metat, Prince of the Divine Presence, said to me: The Holy One, blessed be he, revealed to me from that time onward all the mysteries of wisdom, all the depths of the perfect Torah and all the thoughts of men’s hearts. All the mysteries of the world and all the orders of nature stand before me as they stand revealed before the Creator. From that time onward I looked and beheld deep secrets and wonderful mysteries. Before a man thinks in secret, I see his thought; before he acts, I see his act. There is nothing in heaven above or deep within the earth concealed from me. R. Ishmael said: Metat, Prince of the Divine Presence said to me: Out of the love which he had for me, more than for all the denizens of the heights, the Holy One, blessed be he, fashioned for me a majestic robe, in which all kinds of luminaries were set, and he clothed me in it. He fashioned for me a glorious cloak in which brightness, brilliance, splendor and luster of every kind were fixed, and he wrapped me in it, He fashioned for me a kingly crown in which 49 refulgent stones were placed, each like the sun’s orb, and its brilliance shone into the four quarters of the heaven of ‘Arabot, into the seven heavens, and into the four quarters of the world. He set it upon my head, and he called me, “The lesser HaShem” in the presence of his whole household in the height, as it is written, “My name is in him.” (3 Enoch 11:1 – 12:5, The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, ed. James Charlesworth, Hendrickson Publishers, pg. 268)

Revelation 2:24
“But to you I say, to the rest who are in Thyatira, as many as do not have this teaching, who do not know what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, ‘I am not putting any other burden on you.’”

Gnosticism promised salvation through hidden knowledge, and Gnosticism produced false gospels.

Revelation 2:25
“Nevertheless, hold that which you have firmly until I come.”

This seems to echo Yeshua’s Parable of the Talents

‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.’ (Luke 19:26, ESV)

Revelation 2:26
“He who overcomes, and he who keeps my works to the end, to him I will give authority over the nations.”

This is an echo of Psalm 2, and applies to the Mashiach. The believers will be invested with the authority of the Mashiach over the nations,

“Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.” (Psalm 2:8, ESV)

Revelation 2:27
“He will rule them with a rod of iron, shattering them like clay pots, as I also have received of my Father:”

You shall break them with a rod of iron    and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.” (Psalm 2:9, ESV)

Revelation 2:28
“and I will give him the Morning Star.”

2:28-29. The morning star, Venus, heralded the dawn, and great people could be compared to it as well as to the sun shining in glory (Sirach 50:6); cf. Revelation 22:16. (Keener, Craig S.. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (IVP Bible Background Commentary Set) (p. 735). InterVarsity Press. Kindle Edition.)

In Psalm 22:1, known as the Crucifixion Psalm, the words
אַיֶּלֶת הַשַּׁחַר are sometimes translated as the ‘Morning Star’ or the ‘Doe of the Dawn’.  The Midrash on Psalms says,

“At night, though it be night, one has the light of the moon, the stars, and the planets. Then when is it really dark? Just before dawn! After the moon sets and the stars set and the planets vanish, there is no darkness deeper than the hour before dawn. And in that hour the Holy One answers the world and all that are in it: out of the darkness He brings forth the dawn and gives light to the world. The hind of the dawn [the morning star]–its light rays out as it rises. At the beginning, light comes little by little; then it spreads wider and wider, grows and increases; and at last it bursts into shining glory.”

(Sefer HaAggadah, Translated by Schocken Books, citing Midrash Tehillim 22:4 and 22:13; Aggadat Esther 7:10 (ed. Buber, p. 68); B. Yoma 29a)

For more information, see Ladder of Jacob, Balak: The Secret of the Star

Revelation 2:29
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”

This famous saying of Yeshua echoes Moshe Rabbeinu,

“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak, and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.” (Deuteronomy 32:1)

The Prophet Isaiah also says this, but inverted,

“Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the L-rd has spoken.” (Isaiah 1:2, ESV)
